FSF Restructures Academic Membership Category
An up-to-date grasp of safety issues is fundamental to aviation education. Drones, commercial spacecraft and air taxi services are complicating the airspace. Meanwhile, we know that our own success has bred the threat of complacency. The new generation of aviation professionals needs the latest information on keeping our skies safe.
As the leading international, independent and impartial expert, Flight Safety Foundation can make that happen. That is why, for the first time, we are expanding our Academic membership from faculty to include students.
Previously, membership benefits in the Academic category applied to faculty at the member institutions, but under the revised structure, membership benefits will be extended to students at member schools and training organizations. Members of the Foundation who had joined as an Academic member under the previous structure will have the opportunity to enroll in the new category based on the number of students in their program. Membership dues for the new Academic category are now based on the number of students in the academic program.
Through the Foundation’s website, students and faculty will have instant access to key safety articles, Foundation news, seminar proceedings and projects that will be useful to them in their academic teachings and studies. They will have 24/7 access to the information they want. Now that AeroSafety World has become an online resource through the digital subscription and mobile app, academic institutions will receive as part of their membership additional subscriptions for interested students.
Through the membership restructure, academic institutions will be able to promote their programs to Foundation members representing airlines, manufacturers and regulators. And students will have the unique opportunity to network with aviation professionals globally. In fact, academic institutions will receive two complimentary student registrations to annual Foundation safety summits, including our Business Aviation Safety Summit (BASS), International Air Safety Summit (IASS) and Singapore Aviation Safety Seminar (SASS). Other students in the program will receive discounted registration to attend.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University are the first academic institutions to enroll in the new category, and collectively, they are making valuable Flight Safety Foundation resources available to thousands of their students worldwide.
Today, aviation safety goes beyond events that make the news. It involves preventive work that carefully examines and correlates global data from flights and aircraft everywhere. At the Foundation, we recognize that this approach to safety will be everyone’s business, transcending all other business factors. The new Academic Membership offers a chance to prepare students for a career that will encounter these changes.
